El Dorado County Board of Supervisors has done it again. They have illegally used their discretionary power and aligned with the Redhawk Casino's Tribal Council to move forward on a massive project which will destroy the surrounding community's property values and lifestyle forever.
We, the citizens of El Dorado County, must take a stand and hold our County Supervisors accountable for this abuse of power. The role of a Supervisor is to work for the people who entrusted them with great responsibility. They should understand the needs of local businesses and communities. In this case, our Supervisors showed negligence and indifference to the citizens of El Dorado County.
The El Dorado Council has retained legal counsel to demand that the Board of Supervisors requires the Tribal Council to complete an Environmental Impact Report (EIR) to mitigate the negative impacts of their huge project on Shingle Springs Drive. We are standing up to the County and Tribal Council. The question before you is: Are you willing to stand with us to fight for your neighborhood, your family’s lifestyle, and your property values?
Any Tribe can buy land or a business anywhere in El Dorado County and petition the U.S. Government to put their purchased land into “TRUST,” as they have with the 35.64 acres in Shingle Springs. The Tribe will then pay no property tax, no sales tax, and no required liability insurance. The Tribe will adhere to no local rules, local ordinances, or restrictions on land use. All of this leads to unfair competition to the rest of us and destruction of our General Plan. Any Tribe can buy into El Dorado County whether it’s the Auburn Tribe from Placer County to the north, the Me-Wuk in Amador County to the south, or the Miwok in El Dorado County. No neighborhood is safe, no zoning is safe, no business is safe, and no community is safe from lower property values, loss of the safety of rural neighborhoods, or safe from the drugs and crime that follows the Tribal money.
On June 28 of this year the Board of Supervisors (Ron Mikulaco, Brian Veerkamp, Michael Ranalli, and Sue Novasel), voted against the families and taxpayers of El Dorado County for a monetary “hand out” from the Tribal Council. The Board of Supervisors abdicated their responsibility to require a full Environmental Impact Report (EIR) required by the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) by segmenting a huge project into small components.
The key statement made at the board meeting was that the Tribal Council was in negotiations for a monetary settlement for loss of revenues to the County. It became clear these four board members sold the community out for cash to spend on their “pet projects,” which is happening now with Tribal money that was earmarked for Shingle Springs being diverted to Missouri Flat area.
The El Dorado Council, a grassroots community-based nonprofit organization, informed the Board of Supervisors of their legal rights to slow this project. The Board responded with NO COMMENT.
The El Dorado Council needs your help. If you think it’s someone else’s problem, THINK AGAIN! Today it’s Shingle Springs. Tomorrow it’s 35 acres in Grassy Run in Placerville. Is your community next?
