Dear Shingle Springs Residents and Rural Lifestyle Supporters,
Thank you to all of you who attended or provided comments ahead of the Board of Supervisors hearing on our appeal of the Planning Commission’s approval of an ARCO gas station, convenience store and car wash at the corner of Durock Road and South Shingle Road. The Board decided to approve the Project, but added a condition of approval that the project will not be allowed to begin construction until June 1, 2028 or the start of the U.S. 50/Ponderosa Rd./So. Shingle Rd. Interchange Improvement Project (https://www.eldoradocounty.ca.gov/Land-Use/County-Projects/Road-Transportation-Projects/U.S.-50Ponderosa-Rd.So.-Shingle-Rd.-Interchange-Improvement), whichever is sooner. Additionally, the applicant modified aspects of their project design to address some community concerns, although the project is still not fully compliant with the County landscaping standards.
While we believe the Board should have either denied the project outright or at least delayed construction until completion of the interchange improvement project, we are proud of the Shingle Springs community. Dozens of community members provided clear evidence regarding how bad the existing traffic situation is in and around the Ponderosa Road/Highway 50 interchange. Supervisors expressed their hope that the additional condition of approval will allow construction on the ARCO station and interchange project to take place simultaneously, reducing impacts to the community and reducing the amount of time Durock Road may be used by gas station traffic prior to the realignment of Durock.
We are evaluating the options for next steps but regardless will monitor the project closely to ensure that all conditions of approval are followed and the promises made by the applicant are fulfilled. In addition, we will continue to defend Shingle Springs’ rural environment and demand that adequate infrastructure be provided prior to the implementation of any development projects.
Thank you for standing with us and speaking up. We sent a clear message that the Shingle Springs community remains passionate and is ready to advocate for our safety and quality of life.
